Everything has always been, and will always be, a mess. Including you and me, and everyone we know, and everything we’ve ever known. There is no secret to the universe that allows me or you or anyone who has ever existed to bypass this. People worse off than us live happy, fulfilled lives because they’re not gaslighting themselves into trying to be people they aren’t and hating themselves for failing miserably at it. They’ve accepted who and what and when and where and why they are or are not, and they’re okay with it. Most of what we call ambition is our stupid egos dressed up as “life.” Careers, zip code, friends, restaurants, brands, bands… It’s all scaffolding built to keep our egos comfy, complimented and in need of zero honest self-reflection. Try to do the things you want to do solely because you want to do them, not because you think other people want you to do them, or because you want other people to think you want to do them. Otherwise, you’ll be watching the movie of your life and it’ll be boring the shit out of you and everyone else in the theater. But make sure those things aren’t harming anyone or anything other than (and ideally not even) yourself. Nobody needs to give you permission to be whatever it is that you actually want to be. All you need to do is to accept yourself, all of the amazing and weird and lame and fascinating parts, and lobotomize all of the self-judgement and doubt that comes from familial, institutional, social sources telling you who you are and what you’re allowed to be or want to be, what emotions you can have, and how you’re allowed to have them. Love isn’t always love. Worry isn’t always worry. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Sometimes they’re just control wearing a caring face. Who cares!
